Domain Expiry Checker

Free, no signup. The lookup runs in your browser against the registry's public data.

Free domain expiry checker, no signup. Enter a domain name to see the date it expires, the number of days left, the registrar, and the status codes that matter around expiry. One button adds the date to your calendar with a reminder 30 days before.

What This Domain Expiry Checker Shows

  • The expiry date published by the domain’s registry.
  • The days left, or the days since expiry when the date has passed.
  • The registrar that manages the domain.
  • The registration date, the last update and the status codes, with a plain explanation of the ones tied to expiry.
  • A calendar file for the expiry date, with a reminder 30 days before.

The lookup uses RDAP, the registries’ public data service that replaces WHOIS. It runs in your browser: the domain you check is not sent to our server.

How to Check When a Domain Expires

  1. Type the domain name above, for example example.com.
  2. Select Check expiry.
  3. Read the date and the days left. If the domain is yours, select Add the expiry date to my calendar.

What Happens When a Domain Expires

An expired domain is not released the next day. For generic endings such as .com, .net and .org, ICANN’s Expired Registration Recovery Policy sets these rules:

WhenWhat the rules say
Before expiryThe registrar must warn the owner at least twice: about one month before and about one week before.
After expiryIf the domain is not renewed within five days, the registrar must send at least one more notice.
While the owner can still renewThe registrar must interrupt the domain for at least the last eight days of that period: the website and email stop working.
After the registrar deletes itThe registry must offer a redemption period of 30 days, during which the owner can still restore the domain.

How long the owner can renew after expiry, and at what price, depends on the registrar. Country endings such as .uk, .de or .fr follow their own rules.

Status Codes Around Expiry

StatusMeaning
auto renew periodThe registration period ended and the registry extended it automatically. It is a grace period of limited length: the renewal is not final yet.
client holdThe registrar took the domain out of DNS: it does not resolve.
redemption periodThe registrar asked the registry to delete the domain. It stays in this status for 30 days, during which the owner can still restore it for a fee.
pending deleteThe redemption period ended without a restore. The domain is deleted after a few days and then becomes available again.

ICANN lists every code in its guide to EPP status codes.

Want a Domain That Is About to Expire?

A close expiry date is not a sign that the domain will be free. Many registrars renew automatically, and the owner can still renew after the date. Before you plan around it, look at what the domain was used for with the Website History Checker, check its age with the Domain Age Checker, and read our guide on how to buy a domain that is taken.

How do I check when a domain expires?

Enter the domain name in the checker above. It reads the expiry date from the domain’s registry and shows the days left, the registrar and the status codes.

Is the expiry date exact?

It is the date held by the registry on the day you check. Many registrars renew automatically, so the date often moves forward by a year around expiry. The registrar may also show a slightly different date in the owner’s account.

What happens when a domain expires?

It is not released at once. For endings such as .com, the registrar must warn the owner before and after expiry, the website and email stop working for at least eight days while the owner can still renew, and after deletion the registry keeps a 30-day redemption period.

Can I register a domain the day it expires?

No. The owner keeps the right to renew for a period set by the registrar, then a 30-day redemption period follows for endings such as .com. The owner can renew or restore the domain during that time.

Why does a domain show no expiry date?

Some endings do not publish an expiry date, and a few have no public lookup service at all. In both cases the owner sees the date in the registrar account.

What does the calendar button do?

It downloads a standard calendar file (.ics) with the expiry date as an all-day event and a reminder 30 days before. The file is made in your browser; nothing is sent to us.

What is the difference between expiry date and domain age?

The expiry date is when the current registration ends. Domain age is the time since the domain was first registered. A domain can be 20 years old and expire next month.
